Two Men to Remake Lord of the Flies With All-Female Cast

Warner Bros. has made a deal with Scott McGehee and David Siegel to produce a remake of Lord of the Flies, a 1963 film based on the novel by William Golding about a group of boys stranded on an island who devolve into a feral, primal power struggle. But this remake will have one key difference: This time the students will be all girls.

McGehee and Siegel, who are both men, are set to write and direct this all-female adaptation. According to Deadline, McGehee said the story “is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn’t been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression.”

Uh huh. Sure, okay. You know, when people demonstrated there was a market for stories that replace their male characters with female characters, we doubt this is the story they were clamoring for. We don’t think anyone was really anxious to see a story about, as Vulture puts it, “toxic matriarchy, which isn’t actually a thing that exists as a threatening issue in the real world.”
