The First Mary Poppins Returns Teaser Strikes Nostalgia Into Our Hearts

“It is wonderful to see you,” says Michael Banks in the newly released teaser trailer for one of 2018’s most anticipated films, Mary Poppins Returns. The trailer premiered online after part of the teaser aired during the 90th Academy Awards last night.

The trailer begins on a blustery day in England. The wind blows a kite through a park where a little boy begins to follow it. With the help of a kind streetlamp lighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), the boy wrangles the kite as it soars into the sky, eventually revealing a mysterious figure descending through the clouds towards the ground. The iconic image of Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) holding her umbrella while coming down from the heavens to offer her assistance to a family in needs sparks all the nostalgia for the original 1964 film.

Blunt stars as the title heroine, Mary Poppins, following Julie Andrews’ Oscar-winning performance in 1964. The film takes place much later than the original, however. A grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) are visited once again by the heroine of their past after suffering a tragedy. Mary Poppins shows up to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder of life that they seemed to have lost.

The film is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Rob Marshall (Chicago), with a screenplay by Academy Award nominee David Magee (Finding Neverland). Based on the novel by P.L. Traverse, Mary Poppins Returns also stars Academy Award winners Meryl Streep and Colin Firth. The film arrives in cinemas on Christmas Day 2018.
