Netflix outbid several other suitors for spec script Mother, written by Underground co-creator and writer Misha Green. After one company put in a ticking-clock offer, Netflix bid seven figures to close the deal.
Few details are out on the script, but it does have a female protagonist in a spy-themed plot that “has franchise potential,” according to Deadline, who first reported the news. CAA brokered the deal and Roy Lee will produce alongside Green.
Despite the cancellation of Underground, Green seems to have come out ahead of the curve. Mother marks the second big project for Green in just a few weeks after she signed on to write the pilot for Lovecraft Country, produced by Jordan Peele and given a straight-to-series order by HBO.
