Atlanta breakout star Zazie Beetz will complete the love triangle in the astronaut drama Pale Blue Dot, starring Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm, according to THR. Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley will direct the feature, which is actually based on real events that happened over a decade ago.
The film centers around a female astronaut (Portman) who begins to mentally unravel after returning to Earth from a long time in space. It is believe this condition affects many astronauts who come back to Earth as they begin to lose their sense of reality—this causes a rift between the astronaut and her family. While in space, Portman’s character, a married woman, begins an affair with a fellow astronaut (Hamm) and following her return to Earth, she discovers her lover has entered into an affair with a trainee astronaut, throwing her into a spiral.
Beetz will play the trainee astronaut if negotiations go through and scheduling works out. Portman replaced Reese Witherspoon in the lead role due to scheduling conflicts, though Witherspoon will still produce alongside her Big Little Lies producer, Bruna Papandrea. Hamm signed on to play the male astronaut, linking the love triangle together.
Beetz has quickly become one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood after her breakout in FX’s Atlanta. She has a major role in Deadpool 2, coming out this May. She is currently set to star opposite Kristin Stewart in the Jean Seberg biopic Against All Enemies, about the FBI’s attempt to discredit Seberg due to her support of the Black Panther Party in the 1970s. She just wrapped production on Steven Soderbergh’s High Flying Bird from Moonlight’s Oscar-winning writer Tarell Alvin McCraney. She is also set to star in an untitled horror film from Annapurna Pictures with Armie Hammer and Dakota Johnson.
