New on Redbox: All the Movies Coming in April
Images via Warner Bros. PicturesDespite the dominance of streaming services that hardly require you to lift a finger, let alone leave the house, there still remains a big name in physical movie rentals: Redbox. Or at least that’s how we tend to think of the service, though it now has an online streaming component to match its signature kiosks. Redbox is adding a number of eye-catching titles in April, both physically and digitally, and we’ve taken it upon ourselves to relay them to you.
Leading the way are a couple of popcorn movies you might have missed in theaters, as well as a few awards season holdovers you can finally cross off your list. First and foremost is the delightful fan (and family) favorite Paddington 2, which Paste Movies Editor Michael Burgin called “a joy to watch.” The universally acclaimed sequel to 2014’s Paddington currently boasts a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is available to rent on demand and in kiosks starting on April 17 and 24, respectively. Redbox’s other incoming crowd-pleasers include Oscar-nominated original musical The Greatest Showman (available to rent in kiosks or on demand April 10), action-packed Taraji P. Henson vehicle Proud Mary (available to rent in kiosks or on demand April 10), franchise-finishing young-adult adaptation Maze Runner: The Death Cure (available to buy on demand April 10 and to rent in kiosks on April 24), intense heist thriller Den of Thieves (available to rent in kiosks April 24) and the merciful end of the Fifty Shades trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed (available to buy on demand April 24).
As far as those aforementioned awards season favorites go, Steven Spielberg’s The Post leads the way. The Best Picture-nominated prestige journalism drama, starring Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and just about every character actor you’ve ever even heard of, is available to buy on demand April 3, and to rent on demand or in kiosks on April 17. The Post didn’t wind up taking home any Academy Awards this year, but Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread sure did—it won the Oscar for best costume design, naturally. The film, Daniel Day-Lewis’ last, is available to rent on demand or in kiosks on April 10, as are a pair of other Oscar nominees: Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game, starring Jessica Chastain as underground poker game mastermind Molly Bloom, and Ridley Scott’s All the Money In the World, starring Christopher Plummer as miserly oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. Rounding out the critically acclaimed slate is Scott Cooper’s Hostiles, a brutal yet beautiful 19th-century Western starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi—that is available to buy on demand April 17, and to rent on demand or in kiosks on April 24.
