Photo by Jeff Spicer/GettyRobert Downey Jr. is back in the role of the sleuthing detective, and Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher is now in line to direct Sherlock Holmes 3, per Variety.
The franchise has originally been directed by Guy Ritchie, who directed 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011.
A third film has always been in the works according to Warner Bros., but due to RDJ’s busy schedule, the project hasn’t moved forward. The guy was Iron Man, after all. But after seeing Avengers: Endgame, we’re pretty sure the actor’s schedule has cleared up a bit…
The film is expected to be released in theaters on Dec. 21, 2021, after being initially pushed back from its initial Christmas Day 2020 release date.
Jude Law is expected to reprise his role of Professor Watson alongside Downey’s Holmes. With Fletcher in the director’s seat, Narcos writer Chris Brancato will pen the script. It was previously reported that Treasure Island writer James Coyne would write the script. Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram will be producing the mystery-filled flick.
Both of the previous Holmes films have done decently well at the box office. The first film has a worldwide gross of $524 million with its sequel bringing in $545 million worldwide.
