Film and television lovers who happen to possess Showtime subscriptions have a lot to look forward to right now: The pay-cable channel’s streaming platform is adding a number of exciting titles in April, and we’re here to tell you exactly which ones.
Showtime’s incoming feature film slate is particularly attractive, with quite a few classics among its ranks. April 1 will see the addition of Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated period epic Amistad, Ron Howard’s Oscar-winning space exploration drama Apollo 13, both volumes of Quentin Tarantino’s hyper-stylized revenge saga Kill Bill, underrated Daniel Craig-led crime caper Layer Cake, Nic Cage-starring arms-dealing drama Lord of War, iconic ‘80s sci-fi classic Tron and Paul Verhoeven’s ultra-violent (and unsettlingly prescient) dystopian crime thriller Robocop, among others. Movies to follow later in the month include A Dog’s Purpose (April 6), The Sense of an Ending (April 12) and Cheech & Chong’s Nice Dreams (April 19).
On the television side of things, Showtime has a solid lineup of original shows going right now, with new episodes of long-running spy thriller Homeland (now in its seventh season), power-politics drama Billions (now in its third) and animated political parody Our Cartoon President (only in its first) to air on Sunday nights in April. Also coming to Showtime’s TV library is the new season of political docu-series The Circus, starting on April 15 at 8 p.m. EST/PST. The celebrated show, hosted by John Heilemann (NBC/MSNBC, Game Change), Mark McKinnon and Alex Wagner (CBS News, The Atlantic), offers viewers a “fast-paced, real-time, backstage perspective” on the titular circus that is American politics, with its new season “once again [taking] its cue from the narratives driving the national conversation from the White House to Congress to the fast-approaching, high-stakes mid-terms,” per Showtime.
In the documentary and comedy special department, Showtime’s incoming slate is all but empty, with only one stand-up special on the way: Kirk Fox: That Guy (April 13), the latest hour from stand-up comic and actor Fox, who has popped up in everything from Parks and Recreation and Community to Wyatt Earp and The Patriot. And don’t sleep on Showtime’s streaming collections, with feature film playlists geared towards fans of legendary directors, femme fatales, haunted houses, Denzel Washington, weed and so forth, debuting on April 1.
