Hard to believe, but it’s nearly time to ring in 2019. For those who know better than to join the start-of-year gym rush, Starz is here with plenty of new film and TV newly available to stream throughout January.
On the film side, the big standout is perhaps Sicario: Day of the Soldado (Jan. 19), this year’s sequel to the 2015 hit Sicario. Written by Taylor Sheridan, as with the first film, Day of the Soldado is a bloody match-up with returning stars Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin, although Emily Blunt is notably missing in this latest installment. Several critics, including Paste’s Will Leitch, missed the grand social and moral vision of original director Denis Villeneuve in Day of the Soldado, though the new film has earned merits as a solid action flick.
Prior to that, though, the year kicks off with a fairly eclectic bunch of standouts available starting at the top of the month. Highlights for Jan. 1 include Sergio Leone’s 1966 ‘spaghetti western’ classic The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, the 2001 cult favorite Josie and the Pussycats and the 2011 alien invasion thriller Attack the Block, the last of which introduced audiences to future Star Wars star John Boyega and writer-director Joe Cornish, who is making his highly anticipated directorial follow-up later in January with The Kid Who Would Be King.
On Jan. 11, new selections include Spike Lee’s semi-autobiographical Crooklyn, which fared quite impressively on Paste’s ranking of the best Lee joints. Over in Manhattan, Whit Stillman’s delightful 1998 nightclub dramedy The Last Days of Disco, which earlier this year celebrated its 20th anniversary, also arrives on Starz that same day. Billy Wilder’s 1941 film noir classic Double Indemnity arrives on Starz Jan. 25.
As far as TV goes, the Starz app will be welcoming the classic shows Miami Vice and Knight Rider (Jan. 4), as well as the animated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power (Jan. 11). Throughout the month, on Sundays, Starz will continue airing the acclaimed Counterpart and Outlander.
Fans should be sure to catch the trilogy-capping Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, before it leaves Starz early in the month on Jan. 4. Other worthwhile titles leaving the app this month include German writer-director Maren Ade’s towering Toni Erdmann (Jan. 25) and David Cronenberg’s 1983 body-horror classic Videodrome (Jan. 31).
Below, check out the full list of what’s new on Starz, as well as what you need to catch up on before it’s taken off the app.
