Take a Walk in the Woods with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte

“This wouldn’t be so bad, I told myself. But secretly, I knew that I was quite wrong,” Bill Bryson writes at the outset of A Walk in the Woods.

We’ve all been there.

A Walk in the Woods opened this week in theaters across the country and chronicles the journey of travel writer Bill Bryson (played by Academy Award winner Robert Redford) and his long lost friend Stephen Katz (played by Nick Nolte) as they take on the Appalachian Trail.

The film is based on the 1998 book by Bryson. Upon returning to the United States after nearly 20 years of living and working in Britain, the journalist becomes obsessed with the portion of the Appalachian Trail near his home and decides to hike it with Katz, his only friend willing to join him on the trek.

The majority of the filming occurred on location in Georgia.

Shooting spots along the actual Appalachian Trail included the Lodge at Amicalola Falls and Neels Gap.

Park Rangers along the trail are preparing for an influx of visitors as a result of the movie’s release, though Bryson thinks that the story and cringe-worthy scenes may actually deter many from attempting the hike.

Bryson, a native of Des Moines, returned to Britain with his family in 2003 and resides there today. His other titles include A Short History of Nearly Everything, Notes from a Small Island and The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid.
