Watch James Franco as Tommy Wiseau in A24’s The Room Mockumentary The Disaster Artist

The first teaser trailer for James Franco’s meta comedy The Disaster Artist is here, ushering in a new brand of Hollywood humor that we here at Paste are excited about, to say the least. The Disaster Artist, which Franco also directed, is a mockumentary of the making of Tommy Wiseau’s notoriously horrible movie The Room.

Starring Franco as Wiseau, the film is based on Wiseau’s Room costar Greg Sestero’s book of the same name, in which he detailed his experience working on the film. Seth Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, purchased the rights to his book in 2014, and Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (500 Days of Summer, The Fault in Our Stars) adapted the book for the screen. Sestero will be portrayed by Franco’s brother, Dave. Wiseau and Sestero recently made another film, Best F®iends, which features an original score by Imagine Dragon’s Dan Platzman and might have been filmed with an Android phone.

The Disaster Artist cast is sufficiently loaded with comedic chops and star power, including Zac Efron, Bryan Cranston, Josh Hutcherson, Sharon Stone, Hannibal Buress and Megan Mullally. Wiseau will also be making a “contractually obligated” appearance.

Watch Franco (as Wiseau) try to remember the infamous lines, “I did not hit her. It’s not true. It’s bullshit. I did not hit her. I did not. Oh hi Mark,” above, and watch the original scene below (around the 1:12 mark), plus some of the most memorable scenes from the film that started it all.
