Tom Holland-Starring Uncharted Film to Be Directed by Travis Knight

The oft-abandoned Uncharted has found yet another new director.

Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings is in talks to direct the videogame adaptation for Sony Pictures, Deadline reports. Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing the film through Atlas Entertainment, and Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing for Arad Productions. Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Rafe Judkins wrote the script.

The plot will focus on Nathan Drake as a young man before he grows up into the treasure hunter Uncharted players know so well. Drake will be portrayed by Tom Holland, who is clearly having a great day after Sony and Marvel reached an agreement to keep his charming iteration of Spider-Man in the MCU.

Uncharted was created by Naughty Dog for Playstation and has had four installments, as well as a prequel and expansion to the story, The Lost Legacy, which centers on fellow treasure hunter Chloe Frazer. The Uncharted franchise has sold over 41 million copies to date, which signals that plenty of fans would roll out to theaters to see the film.

Even so, the videogame gold has had trouble finding a director to take it to live-action big screens. David O. Russell (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) was the first to get the job, but the story he envisioned centered around a family of art thieves, not Indiana Jones-esque treasure hunters, which totally diverged from the spirit of the games. Speaking of diverging, Neil Burger (Limitless) was the next one chosen for the job, but left it to direct the book-based adaptation Divergent. The film then bounced from Seth Gordon to Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), who left due to a scheduling conflict with his action comedy Free Guy, and then to Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), who—stay with us here—also left.

Holland has remained loyally attached to the film since his casting in 2017, but if this directorial game of hot potato keeps going, he might age out of the “young adult” version of Nathan Drake he’s supposed to play.
