In one week, the Terminator will be back, and Paramount Pictures has released a clip giving us a little bit of an idea of what we’re in for.
From what we’ve seen in the trailer, Terminator Genisys is both a sequel and a reboot. It’s a sequel being that it’s in the same universe with the original films, but it’s also a reboot in that a new timeline has been created due to time travel, so previous entries in the series don’t count anymore (kind of like what the X-Men franchise recently did in Days of Future Past).
In this clip, we see a refilmed scene from the original Terminator where a naked and young CGI ’80s Arnold arrives and approaches a group of punks asking for their clothes. It’s a repeat of the original scene — until a different older Arnold approaches them (and ruins the space-time continuum!).
Just from this clip alone, we can tell this film is going to be a major improvement over Terminator Salvation. Although that film was ambitious, it veered away from what we enjoy about the Terminator series, and a big part of that was having the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Genisys seems to be making up for past sins though. This is the first entry of a new trilogy, and Schwarzenegger confirmed that he will be back in the planned sequel, so we’ll have to wait and see if we’ll want him back or if it’s hasta la vista for this series.
