Matthew McConaughey’s beard finally makes sense. It’s the type of facial hair that Mississippi farmer Newt Knight would have worn when he rebelled against the Confederacy, and that’s who McConaughey is playing in the upcoming Civil War action/drama Free State Of Jones.
Written and directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games), the film will tell the story of Knight’s transition from Confederate soldier to leader of an uprising that included poor farmers and local slaves. From the looks of it, McConaughey is over the cheesy Lincoln ads and back to kicking some actual cinematic ass. Check out the debut trailer above.
