Angel Olsen’s music video for “Pops” is one part Erik Satie and two parts “Hello” by Adele. The video, co-directed by Jethro Waters, finds Olsen exploring Asheville, N.C. The song, the final track from Olsen’s 2016 album My Woman—one of Paste’s favorite albums of last year—evokes that post-breakup heartache that singer-songwriters can never seem to get over. Olsen, roaming an old house and driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains in a muted sepia, first implores her ex, “Don’t leave me,” only to close the song resolved that, “I’ll be the thing that lives in the dream when it’s gone.”
The song finds the perfect balance of melancholy and nostalgia in its stripped-down piano accompaniment. Olsen is in her prime in this song, letting her melody add dimensions to a simple text setting.
