Aunt Katrina have shared the news of their debut album with lead single, “Peace of Mind.” This Heat Is Slowly Killing Me, out July 11 via Crafted Sounds, features former feeble little horse guitarist Ryan Walchonski alongside a who’s-who of indie rock collaborators, including Snail Mail’s Ray Brown (drums) and Alex Bass (production), and Tosser’s Eric Zidar (guitar). The announcement comes two years after Aunt Katrina released the Hot EP in 2023. “Peace of Mind” builds from a crisp acoustic riff, seamlessly intertwining with glitchy samples and hazy synth passes. The vocals give an air of Elliott Smith to the track, complimenting the wayward, meandering lyrics (“I got lost in my reflection once again”). The accompanying music video is serene, fountain-centric (fountains often represent renewal), the persistent rushing water providing a sense of certainty that comforts a foggy mind.
The songs on This Heat Is Slowly Killing Me were written in early 2024 and, according to a press release, explore “loss, disillusion, and impermanence.” “A great many of my personal relationships had completely changed, and my writing was struggling to find a way to grapple with this,” Walchonski says. The album, single, and lineup announcement arrives just weeks after Walchonski shared that he would be parting ways with feeble little horse, whose sophomore album Girl With Fish landed at #27 on Paste’s 2023 year-end list and whose recent single “This Is Real” was a song of the week pick in March.
