Danny Brown Looks Back on His “Best Life” in Hypnotic New Video

Still riding high on a wave of acclaim after the October release of his fifth studio album, Danny Brown has shared a new video for the Q-Tip-produced uknowhatimsayin¿ standout “Best Life.”

Shot on location in Brown’s Detroit hometown and directed by Augustin Vita, the video finds the artist looking back on his life, with rotating, fisheye-lensed flashbacks conjuring up everything from his family and his childhood to his adolescence and run-ins with the law. Meanwhile, Brown himself squints and sneers while sitting in a white Cadillac and a cozy apartment, both overflowing with flowers—new life springing from unlikely places, evoking Tupac’s “rose that grew from a crack in the concrete.” “Not supposed to be here, dead, like Weekend at Bernie’s,” Brown raps, seizing every moment of borrowed time, born anew into his best life.

Brown will perform “Best Life” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday, Nov. 12. He’s currently touring North America in support of his new album, with a show tonight (Nov. 11) at Philadelphia’s Theater of Living Arts.

uknowhatimsayin¿ is now streaming, and out on vinyl and CD on Nov. 22 via Warp Records. You can read Harry Todd’s review of the “excellent” record for Paste right here.
