Daily Dose: FACS, “Primary”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

The Chicago-based trio FACS clearly know their post-punk history. The band’s name feels like a reference to the catalog numbers for all the releases on Factory Records, the label that brought the world Joy Division, A Certain Ratio and the Durutti Column. And the title of the song that they are presenting to the world today calls back to a similarly named tune by The Cure.

More than that, FACS’ sound—dark, minimalist and more than a little sexy—is one that could fit snugly into a Messthetics compilation or a nice dark wave DJ set. The group, which features former members of the equally scintillating ensemble Disappears, sets a mood and explores it from every angle. In the case of “Primary” (found on the trio’s debut LP Negative Houses, which is out on March 30th via Trouble In Mind), it’s a rubbery, mekanik funk rhythm that eventually dissolves into a bass line that sounds like a kaiju stomping down a city street. Enjoy this smartly animated video for the track and then take a peek at the band’s tour dates below.
