Haim Announce New Album Something to Tell You, Share Paul Thomas Anderson-Directed Live Video

After a tease or two, one of Paste’s most anticipated albums of 2017 has officially been unveiled: Today, Haim announced their long-awaited second album, Something to Tell You, and shared one hell of a preview in the form of “Right Now.”

The new song comes to us as a live video directed by none other than Paul Thomas Anderson, who stopped by a recording session and shot the band while they performed “a live studio version” of “Right Now.” Apparently, the track isn’t the album’s lead single, though, as a press release notes that the first official single comes out on Wednesday, May 3.

“Right Now” certainly seems to signal a change for Haim—the dynamic track is largely drum machine- and piano-driven at its outset, with some sparkling synths sprinkled in around the halfway point. As the song crescendos, with Danielle anchoring its lovestruck vocals, Este and Alana jump in on percussion, building to a soaring climax. All the while, Anderson’s slow pans allow the sisters Haim’s famed performance energy to shine through. “That’s how you fucking do it,” Este chirps at the end of the clip—we’d be hard-pressed to argue.

Haim re-teamed with Ariel Rechtshaid to produce Something to Tell You, the follow-up to their excellent 2013 debut Days Are Gone. They also worked on the album with Rostam Batamanglij, formerly of Vampire Weekend. It was recently announced that they will live-debut music from their new record for the first time on SNL on May 13, with host Melissa McCarthy.

Something to Tell You is due out on July 7 via Columbia Records. Watch the “Right Now” live video above, and hear a few classic Haim cuts from the Paste Cloud below.
