Today, Jason Isbell has announced a brand new solo album. Foxes in the Snow is set to arrive March 7 via Isbell’s Southeastern Records, and it will mark his first release of new music since the Grammy-winning Weathervanes (which he released with his backing band, the 400 Unit). Across five days, Foxes in the Snow came to life at Electric Lady Studios in New York in October 2024, and the songs were all recorded on Isbell’s mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17 guitar. This album marks Isbell’s first non-400 Unit project since 2015’s Something More Than Free, and its arrival feels like a proper end-cap to an incredible two-year run for him—which has included Grammy Awards, a lauded appearance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and an Artist of the Year designation from us here at Paste. In 2023, I wrote that Isbell’s work is “a portrait of life as we know it” and that “he remains a beacon through the best and worst of times—if only for his willingness to write songs that are sometimes romantic and sublime yet painfully true and honest.”
Along with the announcement of Foxes in the Snow comes the record’s lead single, “Bury Me.” It’s a stripped-back singer-songwriter evocation, as Isbell sings of outlaws and bars “with swinging doors for all the time between,” and bars for singing. It’s a straight-laced, no-frills Americana song and it’s impressively Jason Isbell—steely as they come yet emotionally dense. “Bury me in the last few lines of an obituary for these trying times” is a line that’ll stick with me this week. Listen to “Bury Me” below.
