Johnny Marr has announced his fifth solo album, The Age of Everything, due out October 2 on BMG. The former Smiths guitarist, 62, has described the album as his “most cathartic” yet, developed live from material recorded on tour across North America. Written in London and recorded in Manchester—Marr’s hometown—the LP tackles the “sense of overwhelm in the culture brought about by technology” while also treating it as carrying “a sense of possibility.” It’s Marr’s first record since the double album Fever Dreams Pts 1-4, which was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic and released in 2022.
“Spin,” the Age of Everything lead single, has been previewed at multiple live shows of Marr’s across 2025 and 2026. Backed by stabby, urgent guitars, Marr seems torn between chastising the world for the speed it’s moving at and himself for not being able to keep up. “There’s too much coming and too much time,” he sings with urgency. It acts as a thesis statement for a record Marr has described as being sharp and dynamic, aimed at capturing “the energy and tensions” of Manchester as well as the modern era in a wider sense.
Last month, Marr announced that he would be playing the OVO Arena Wembley in October 2026, for what will be his biggest solo concert yet. Before that, he’s set for a homecoming gig at Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl on July 9, 2026. Oh, and today marks the 40th anniversary of The Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead. Read about that here.
