Kesha reminds us of her independence on “Woman,” the newest song from her forthcoming Rainbow LP, full of funk, soul and independence. The Dap-Kings horn section gives “Woman” barrels of elation as Kesha drives “around town in [her] Cadillac” before taking over a bar in a glittery gold, cape-donned ensemble. At multiple points the singer interrupts the song to giggle uncontrollably. The video evokes other music videos Kesha has done in the past, while a bit more luxurious than previous party sequences. She co-directed the video with her brother Lagan Sebert, ensuring that her image is in her own hands.

While her general aesthetic and unabashed partying remain true, the rock and soul influences in both “Woman” and “Praying” show Kesha’s true music inspirations. (Both Dolly Parton and Eagles of Death Metal appear on her forthcoming album.) She’s shed the pop gimmicks of choreographed dancers, backing vocalist and large projection screens since her well-publicized legal battle with Dr. Luke and subsequent touring as Kesha and The Creepies.

The singer’s second single from Rainbow is also accompanied with an essay written for Rolling Stone. She writes about growing from a girl into a woman, and how she has found love for being self-sufficient and strong—which she channeled into “Woman.” “There are still a lot of emotions on my new album,” Kesha writes,” but the wild fun energy that first inspired me to perform has not, and will never, go away.”
