In many ways, Lana Del Rey’s latest music video for “Love” is the most Lana Del Rey thing yet. Indeed, a video about the moral disenchantment of the space race is so Lana that it’s a genuine surprise it hadn’t been made two years ago.
All the bingo squares for a Lana Del Rey music video are filled: the video jumps between black-and-white and Polaroid filters. Vintage cars are featured. There are closeups on a) Lana’s lips, b) Lana’s eyebrows, c) whiskey and d) a cigarette. Lana wears flowers in her hair and, as per usual, looks the part of the manic pixie dream queen.
All this, of course, does not mean the song is bad. Quite the contrary, it is absolutely mesmerizing. Her smokey Americana is dreamy, nostalgic and, dare we say, moving? Her vision, which jumps between cheesy cosmological landscapes and vintage romance, is positively Freudian.
The song is the first from a forthcoming album to be released later this year via Interscope Records. “I made my first 4 albums for me, but this one is for my fans and about where I hope we are all headed,” said the singer in a statement.
