The lyric video for Leonard Cohen’s “Traveling Light” is guaranteed to make you feel things. The video was compiled by visual artist Sammy Slabbinnck, who also designed You Want It Darker’s cover. Slabbinnck mentions in a Facebook post that Cohen’s son Adam was also instrumental in creating the video:
With the excellent guidance of Adam Cohen I had the honour of making this video, a combination of archival & previously unseen footage, for one of Leonard Cohen’s last masterpieces :
” Traveling Light. ”
As a lifelong fan myself I created a memorial video to commemorate the man “ who was born with the gift of a golden voice” .
The video begins with interview footage of Cohen, reflecting on his old age. “I feel a lot stronger,” Cohen says, “but I’m actually a lot weaker.” The video presents concert and archival footage to pair with Cohen’s heart-wrenching song.
In David Remnick’s landmark interview with Cohen, conducted merely a month or so before his death last November, Cohen explained his thinking about aging:
At a certain point, if you still have your marbles and are not faced with serious financial challenges, you have a chance to put your house in order. It’s a cliché, but it’s underestimated as an analgesic on all levels. Putting your house in order, if you can do it, is one of the most comforting activities, and the benefits of it are incalculable.
