Lizzo was the first musical guest during the annual MTV Movie & TV Awards that aired live Monday night.
The accomplished singer, rapper and flautist performed “Juice,” from her critically acclaimed album Cuz I Love You, released in April.
With lyrics such as “I know I’m cute” and “I was born like this, don’t even gotta try,” Lizzo brought her powerful message of self-care and body positivity to the stage in Santa Monica and to millions of viewers worldwide.
The theme of self-love resonated throughout the televised awards ceremony, with host Zachary Levi encouraging young viewers to love themselves, using Lizzo as a prime example.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s speech reflected similar themes, with him telling viewers to “take everybody” with them when experiencing success. He also echoed Lizzo’s sentiment, as another notable lyric of “Juice” is, “If I’m shinin’, everybody gonna shine.”
Lizzo’s performance garnered claps, cheers and whistles from celebrities and praise from fans on social media. She is currently embarking on an international tour in support of Cuz I Love You, hitting tour stops in North America and Europe.
Lizzo wrote in an Instagram post that her first award show performance was a tribute to Sister Act:
