Tour Diary: Mallrat

In the fall, Mallrat—the project of Brisbane singer-songwriter Grace Shaw—will hit the road with MARINA, opening dates on the pop singer’s Princess of Power Tour. It’s a long time coming for Shaw, whose own new album, Light hit my face like a straight right, was a Valentine’s Day treasure and spawned a successful North American tour. As she and her bandmates put on sold-out gigs with the likes of Daine, Anna Shoemaker, and Mercer Henderson, Shaw was gearing up to release a cover of Lana Del Rey‘s “Radio.” “I love how the melodies and the delivery of the original feel like a national anthem,” she says. “The lyrics are triumphant and remind me of how incredible it feels to defy people’s expectations. I remember listening to this song when I was a teenager, I often felt really isolated and this song was something that felt like a hopeful connection to my future self. I would listen to it and visualize my life being different.” You could, and should, say something similar about Shaw’s own lyrics—especially on tracks like “Pavement” and “Teeth.”
As we continue to sit with Light hit my face like a straight right, Mallrat was kind enough to snap some photos during her recent tour and share them with us here at Paste. Check out the gallery below.

Doing my makeup before a show, it’s my Shushy Gracie time. How cute is my headband btw

Anna and I making s’mores! I love that they are spelled like that, like j’adore. So dramatic. Anna Shoemaker was the support on this run of shows. Simply obsessed with her. This was my first time having a s’more. Moments after this photo was taken I invented something called a Jam S’more which was pretty good but not better than your classic s’more.

This is exactly what tour is like, don’t believe all the cool hot photos, it’s pretty much just this.

My beautiful band: love them to the moon and back. India on the left and Gab in the middle.

At a photoshoot before my show in NYC. Really had my diva boots on this day. Loved my time in New York and wanna go back there sooooon.

Did you know there’s a Statue of Liberty in Nebraska?
