Marika Hackman Releases Absurd, Poppy New Single “the one”

Indie-rock provocateur Marika Hackman has released the second cut from her forthcoming album Any Human Friend, a blistery pop scorcher titled “the one.”
“the one” is strange, absurd and fun. Jagged guitars, webs of clipped harmonies and bright, pop-stained percussion bounce around as Hackman shouts bizarre lyrics into the ether: “You’re such an attention whore!”
“the one,” which Hackman states is the “poppiest song” she has ever written, has its own twisted, swaggering sense of humor. “They’re saying I’m a god sent gift / And all you fuckers want my dick,” she announces apathetically over harried plucking, a nonchalant shrug sonically ushered somewhere in-between drum fills.
Speaking of the song, Hackman stated: “I loved the idea of inhabiting this ridiculous arrogant rock star character who has totally fucked their career by writing too many sad songs.”
The musician announced details of her follow up to 2017’s I’m Not Your Man in May and released its first single in April. Out Aug. 9 via Sub Pop Records, the album finds Hackman—grievous and inspired after a painful break-up with a longtime girlfriend—wading into darker and greater experimental territory.
