Midland, a trio of friends based in Dripping Springs, Texas, is made up of singer Mark Wystrach, lead guitarist Jess Carson and bass player Cameron Duddy. With a swelling fanbase of old-school country lovers, Midland has blossomed by adding touches of ‘70s California country, with its Eagles harmonies and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics, to a foundation of Texas dive-bar grit. But this is no ordinary Lone Star State country outfit. Wystrach has worked as a male model, and Duddy has directed music videos for pop stars like Bruno Mars (“24k Magic”). The band first came together at Duddy’s wedding in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the members ended up jamming onstage at the rehearsal dinner. “It was this serendipitous chain of events, and it was the best week ever,” says Wystrach, who was raised on an Arizona cattle ranch.
Now, With a hit single (“Drinkin’ Problem”) and self-titled EP already under their belt, Midland have unveiled their full-length debut, On the Rocks. A collection of 13 tracks written or co-written by the band (which took its name from a Dwight Yoakam song), On the Rocks quickly sets a down-home mood.
