My Morning Jacket – Acoustic Citsuoca

My Morning Jacket’s studio work has deservedly won the band a staunch legion of fans. But the full extent of its talent can only be truly appreciated live, a context in which the sound is afforded room to unfold. This all-too-brief live EP—captured at an intimate show last Halloween—documents one of the last gigs featuring guitarist Johnny Quaid and keyboardist Danny Cash, who reportedly grew weary of the band’s knee-buckling touring schedule. But don’t expect the material to betray any hints of fatigue. From the band’s jangling energy on “The Bear” and “Sooner” to frontman Jim James’ lonesome solo turns on “Bermuda Highway” and “Golden,” this disc bears a driving emotional intensity. If there is any justice in this world, a more thorough live disc will eventually surface, rewarding longtime fans and winning a mess of new converts.
