Gabbi and the Gang Go Goth in Nasty Cherry’s “What Do You Like in Me?” Video

L.A.-based four-piece Nasty Cherry go full Elvira in the video for their newest single, “What Do You Like in Me?” The track, co-written in one day with the French production trio Planet 1999, settles into a groove not unlike “Everything Is Embarrassing”-era Sky Ferreira, with lead singer Gabbriette musing about relationships online (and off) over drums and off-the-cuff chords.

Gabbriette and her three bandmates—Chloe Chaidez, Georgia Somary and Deborah Knox-Hewson—goth it up in the intentionally lo-fi clip, looking like the macabre hosts of a late-night public-access horror movie, fake cobwebs and all.

Gabbriette, who directed the video with Indiana Piorek, describes what Nasty Cherry were aiming for with “What Do You Like in Me?”:

The song is personal to all of us … Indiana and I wanted to create a world that felt familiar and timeless and let the song speak for itself. We used all of our own clothes and “props” from our homes and friends to help out. It was a wonderful collaboration that I’m so happy was born.

“What Do You Like in Me?” is a natural extension of both their stomping debut single, “Win,” and the band’s general vibe. A press release says the girls are “like if Robert Smith was created by Andy Warhol in the Factory,” which sounds about right. Charli XCX, the electro-pop prodigy responsible for both “Boom Clap” and the Lizzo-featuring “Blame It on Your Love,” signed Nasty Cherry to her label imprint Vroom Vroom Records.

Nasty Cherry will perform a debut show in Brooklyn on June 18 at Baby’s All Right.
