Gallery: Palehound, Ratboys & Youbet at Warsaw
Photos by Emilio HerceOver the weekend, Palehound, Ratboys and Youbet were, unbelievably, on the same bill together at the Warsaw in Brooklyn. Palehound, whose latest LP Eye on the Bat is “a tense endeavor wading into unknown territory, nevertheless projecting raw confidence” that “shows us a band that isn’t afraid to push themselves,” delivered a 16-song set of discog staples, including “Cinnamon,” “The Clutch” and “Route 22.” In their Q&A with El Kempner, music editor Matt Mitchell wrote: “While songs like ‘Cinnamon’ and ‘Feeling Fruit’ positioned Kempner as a talismanic force in singer-songwriter spheres, Eye on the Bat is an album soaked in compositional beauty. From heavy, AC/DC-style rock anthems to subdued synthesizer ballads, the universe of Palehound has never felt so cosmic.”
Last November, we named Ratboys’ album The Window as the 5th best of the year, and the Chicago quartet brought nothing but heat to Brooklyn, playing “Black Earth, WI,” “Morning Zoo” and “Making Noise for the Ones You Love” from that LP, along with longtime favorites “Elvis in the Freezer” and “I Go Out at Night.” In their profile on the band last year, Mitchell wrote: “Ratboys love each other so deeply that they will endure far beyond the rest of us. And what a beautiful truth to know and cherish.”
