Pixies Debut Bizarro Video for “On Graveyard Hill”

Pixies have debuted the bizarro, Hitchcockian visual for “On Graveyard Hill,” the latest cut taken from the band’s forthcoming album Beneath the Eyrie.

Directed by Kii Arens and Bobbi Rich, the video is a hallucinatory space of headache-inducing psychedelic art, swirling palettes of chemically vibrant greens and pinks, revamped Party City costumes, luxury hearse ridesharing companies, possessed palm-readers and Ronettes beehives.

Though the narrative is not entirely clear, it looks like the video follows a very caricature-like, fur-wearing ‘60s-era groupie as she orders an UberHearse to take her to a 24-hour psychic shop, whereupon she becomes possessed and sucked into some sort of devilish, damned, tarot card-reading eternal hell.

The most sobering footage in the whole video are the few-and-far-between shots of frontman Black Francis singing to the camera in Ray Bans—much-needed shining beacons of normalcy spliced in between the ‘60s-indulgent psychedelia.

“Directing for the all mighty Pixies is quite an honor, and I was given complete artistic freedom to do what I wished,” Arens, who pulled inspiration from film director Kenneth Anger, said in a statement. “The freedom to do so makes sense as to why they are such an original, real deal band. I started my career in music creating rock art so it’s perfect for this psychedelic freak-out video release.”

The band are preparing to release their seventh studio album on Sept. 13. You can revisit Beneath the Eyrie’s details and the band’s upcoming tour dates here.

For now, check out the band’s new video below (which just so happens to star the legendary hemophiliac America’s Next Top Model Cycle 12 contestant Alli Harvard and, you know, other members of the band).
