Post-punk bands Preoccupations and Protomartyr have announced a co-headlining North American tour set to run through the end of 2018.
Both bands will play full-length sets and, considering 2018 was particularly exciting as far as releases from each act, their sets will certainly showcase the new music from both.
For Canadian four-piece Preoccupations (fka Viet Cong), the tour follows the release of the band’s third album earlier this year, New Material. The band’s darkly dystopian album was critically acclaimed, including right here at Paste, with Madison Desler noting in her review, “Examinations of creation, destruction and the ways that we often practice the two in vain have regularly been tethered to the Canadian post-punk band’s work … With their third LP, New Material, they dive into it headlong, getting closer to [multi-instrumentalist Scott] Munro’s stated goal than ever before.”
Back in 2014, the Detroit-based Protomartyr were one of Paste’s Best of What’s Next picks. Now, in 2018, their co-headlining tour follows both a successful LP in 2017—Relatives in Descent—and the more recently released Consolation EP, out this past June. In his review, Ben Salmon lauded Relatives in Descent as ”[Protomartyr’s] fourth album of snarling, tightly wound post-punk. [It] builds on what the band has been doing since its 2012 debut No Passion All Technique, with [Joe] Casey turning his loathing outward, and his band sounding bigger and better than ever.”
