Last month, Sabrina Carpenter was granted a restraining order against a 31-year-old man after he was caught repeatedly on the singer’s Ring camera. Now, she’s been granted an extension to that order after the alleged stalker’s harrowing testimony in court on Wednesday. The man, identified as William Applegate, told the court that he and Carpenter were both part of a “classified military government program” tasked with saving the world, as reported by AP. He also claimed to have been recruited for a mission involving “the second coming of Christ” at a Los Angeles hotel, and that it was of paramount importance that he get in touch with Carpenter in order to prevent the world’s collapse. “Carpenter and I being together as soon as possible is essential,” he said in a monotone voice. “I’m the center. I’m key to this entire process.”
Applegate was arrested in May after refusing to leave Carpenter’s property; he had been seen multiple times in the days prior lurking around her house. Carpenter’s lawyer, Blair Berk, said in court that Applegate’s actions “seriously alarmed and harassed” the singer. A signed declaration by Carpenter from last month had stated that she had been caused “severe and ongoing emotional distress” by Applegate’s presence near her home, and that she feared his attempts to reach her would only escalate further. In his ruling, LA County Judge David L. Wasserman told Applegate, in no uncertain terms, that he was not permitted to be within 100 yards of Carpenter until June 17, 2031, and that he was not permitted to contact her or own any firearms. “I understand it’s your belief that, in order to save the world, you and her need to be together. I understand that is your belief,” he explained. “This court has issued its order. And I expect you to obey the order, not what you think the military commands of you… I don’t want you to leave here thinking that your purpose is greater than what I think. The order is the order, and you must follow it. Do you understand?” Applegate responded, “I understand what you’re saying,” though he did not indicate whether or not he would comply.
