Following her Sad13 debut, Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis has shared the second single from her forthcoming solo album Slugger, due out Nov. 11 via Carpark. Much like the album’s lead single “Get A Yes,” “<2” is an empowering feminist anthem, arriving with an equally liberating companion video. In addition, Dupuis has announced her inaugural solo tour, with a string of North American dates starting in late October.

The “<2" video, co-directed by Dupuis and Catherine Elicson, is an homage to YouTube and Instagram make-up application tutorials, featuring cameos by fellow Philly musicians Shamir Bailey, Rachel Browne (Field Mouse), Amanda Bartley (All Dogs) and Emily Shanahan (Empath).

“Undergoing several dissimilar cosmetic transformations fit with the song’s theme of self-determinism, while also celebrating aesthetic mutability,” Dupuis explains in a press release. “Plus, we wanted to make me look like a reptilian and glue a bagel to my head.”

“<2” battles the social stigma attached to women who don’t fit the professional standard created by projected masculinity. “‘<2’ is about choosing to be glossy AND caustic,” Dupuis says in the same press release. “It’s about knowing you’re smart, knowing you’re doused in glitter, and refusing to see these two bits of self-knowledge as conflicting.”
