Sean Combs Wants to Buy the Carolina Panthers, Sign Colin Kaepernick

Sean “Don’t Call Me Diddy” Combs, the world’s richest rapper, said Sunday night that he wants to buy the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and “address the Colin Kaepernick situation,” now that the team is up for sale in the wake of current owner Jerry Richardson’s sexual harassment scandal.

Over the weekend, Richardson announced that he had decided to sell the Panthers while an NFL investigation probes allegations of sexual harassment and other nasty workplace abuses, as detailed in a report by Sports Illustrated.

Combs, who topped Forbes’s list of the wealthiest rappers in 2017 and recently changed his name again, tweeted Sunday night that “There are no majority African American NFL owners. Let’s make history.”

He also posted a video on Twitter saying that he would “be the best NFL owner that you could imagine,” right after incorrectly calling the team the “North Carolina Panthers.”

Kaepernick incurred the wrath of many NFL fans, and won the hearts of many others, when he began taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem in protest of the treatment of African-Americans by law enforcement. A former star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick had been a backup in recent seasons, and this season is a free agent. In October he filed a grievance under the league’s collective-bargaining agreement against NFL owners for collusion, claiming that teams are conspiring to keep him off a roster.

Richardson has owned the Panthers since their founding in 1993 as an NFL expansion franchise. (They played their first game in 1995.) These days, they have a pretty good starting quarterback in Cam Newton. The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player, Newton has 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season for the 10-4 Panthers.

For his part, Kaepernick seems very into Combs’s idea.
