Today, Sedona has announced her debut album, Getting Into Heaven, which will arrive on May 23. But those of us who’ve become well-acquainted with the California ecosystem of sun-dappled indie-rock—a refuge of music populated by the likes of Kate Bollinger, Drugdealer and Jordana—have long known Sedona’s work. The LA-based musician has been releasing music since 2018, and her early singles like “Soft Machine,” “Best in Show” and “Missing in Paradise” were first bites of the sentimental pageantry that came to define her marquee work, like “Quicksand,” “Baby Run” and the especially great “7 Minutes in Heaven.” In the meantime, she’s toured and collaborated with the likes of hemlocke springs, Caroline Polachek, TOPS and others.
Getting Into Heaven lead single “Best Kept Secret” is warm and transportive, as Sedona sings over acoustic guitar notes and weeping pedal steel. Produced by Cairo Marques-Neto and co-written with the Neighbourhood’s Jeremy Freedman, the tune is entrenched in soft pulls of desire and a love flourishing behind closed doors. “Best Kept Secret” is dreamy and simple, Stevie Nicks with a 2020s twist and a slow-burn pop melody that timelessly gives.
“Music has always been the world’s most honest mirror—revealing us to ourselves,” Sedona shared. “Today, songs often feel rushed, much like our way of living. We’re constantly scrolling and moving without actually connecting.” She adds, “I’m trying to slow down and hang out for a while. I wanna drink a strawberry milkshake on a friend’s porch and listen to the radio… to sit down and stay a while. We should practice speaking from the heart. That’s what ‘Best Kept Secret’ is all about—those small, freeing moments, like washing someone-you-love’s face in the morning sun.”
Sedona will be playing at the Echo in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 23, and she’ll be at SXSW in Austin in March. Watch the music video for “Best Kept Secret” and check out the Getting Into Heaven artwork below.
