Listen to Soccer Mommy’s Yearning New Single, “Cool”

Twenty-year-old Nashville native Sophie Allison announced her debut album as Soccer Mommy earlier this month, and today she follows up with a second single. A press release describes “Cool” as “a meditation on identity, on wishing to be someone else for a while.”

“The song focuses on this other person who’s desirable and cool, and it shows how sometimes you can romanticize the idea of being different than you are,” explains Allison. “It comes from a place of insecurity and idealization, which is a feeling that hangs over a lot of the album.”

“Cool” follows ferocious lead Clean single “Your Dog,” which Allison released alongside her album announcement. We highlighted that single alongside quite a few others released that day, with Paste’s Loren DiBlasi describing “Your Dog” as “a subtly dark independence anthem.”

Allison and her band head out on tour with Phoebe Bridgers this weekend, beginning with an Orange County, Calif. show on Saturday, Feb. 3 and culminating in her biggest NYC show yet, a May 4 stop at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade. You’ll find Soccer Mommy’s full spring tour slate below.

One of Paste’s most-anticipated 2018 releases, Clean is out on March 2 via Fat Possum—you can preorder the album here. Listen to “Cool” and see Soccer Mommy’s tour dates below, and revisit our August 2017 Best of What’s Next write-up on Allison right here.
