10 years ago this month, Sufjan Stevens released Carrie & Lowell, an album many regard as the songwriter’s all-time best—thanks to catalog highlights like “Fourth of July” and “Should Have Known Better”—and an album that landed at #186 on our list of the greatest albums of all time. Sufjan’s label, Asthmatic Kitty Records, has announced Carrie & Lowell (10th Anniversary Edition), due out May 30. You can hear the demo of “Mystery of Love” now.
The deluxe edition will feature a new essay by Sufjan, seven previously unheard bonus tracks, an alternate cover, a 40-page art book of old family photos spanning four generations, photos taken by Sufjan in 2015 and a collection artwork/drawings. Disc one contains the original cut of Carrie & Lowell, while disc two is set to feature 40 minutes of extra material, including demos of “Death With Dignity,” “Should Have Known Better,” “The Only Thing” and “Eugene.” A 14-minute (!!!) outtake of “Fourth of July” will also be included.
As Philip Cosores wrote in his Paste review of the album in 2015: “Carrie & Lowell is a demonstration of why Sufjan Stevens sings songs, of why we listen to songs: to feel less alone, to make sense of the things that are the hardest to make sense of.”
