On February 21, Sunny War will release her next album, Armageddon in a Summer Dress, the follow-up to her immeasurably great 2023 LP Anarchist Gospel—which we called a “deeply stirring and infectious collection of alt-folk tracks” that was “is packed to the brim with messages of hope” and named one of the best Americana records of that year. The Andrija Tokic-produced Armageddon in a Summer Dress features contributions from Steve Ignorant, Tré Burt, X’s John Doe, the Deslondes’ John James Tourville and the Raconteurs’ Jack Lawrence, among others.
Today, Sunny War builds on the momentum of the record’s previous singles, “Walking Contradiction” and “Scornful Hate,” with the Valerie June-assisted “Cry Baby,” a track that fuses boundless musical universes into one tempest of spectral folk melody. “I’ve opened for Valerie June quite a bit and years ago I asked her if I could try to write a song for her,” Sunny War says of the track. “Somewhere in Portland, OR, I wrote ‘Cry Baby’ with Valerie in mind. I always listen to her when I want to be calmed down or hugged. I’m stoked that she was down to sing on this song inspired by her.”
