A24 Announces Artist Lineup of Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense

Hot on the heels of its joyous theatrical rerelease of The Talking Heads iconic 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, film studio A24 has announced an equally loving companion project. Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense is a cumbersomely titled but star-studded covers album that announced its full roster of talent today, along with a first song from Paramore, taking on “Burning Down the House.” Oddly, there’s no actual release date on this one yet, beyond “coming soon.”

In alphabetical order, the bands taking songs on Everyone’s Getting Involved include the following: BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, The Cavemen., Chicano Batman Feat. Money Mark, DJ Tunez, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, girl in red, Jean Dawson, Kevin Abstract, The Linda Lindas, Lorde, Miley Cyrus, Paramore, The National, Teezo Touchdown and Toro y Moi. The 16 songs are arranged in the tracklist of the original LP, offering “exciting and utterly surprising reinterpretations” that “will not only introduce a new generation of listeners to Talking Heads’ music but also offer fresh perspectives and unique takes on songs longtime fans have known by heart for decades. This selection of brilliant artists recontextualizes Stop Making Sense in popular music and culture, with a focus on generational and stylistic breadth.”

The concert film, originally shot by director Jonathan Demme over three shows at Pantages Theatre in L.A., celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The restored 4K print screened around the world last fall thanks to A24, which acquired worldwide rights. It was a commercial success, setting a new IMAX record for highest-grossing live event. Publicity for the event also managed to bring together the four core members of Talking Heads for the first time since 2002, with David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison all participating in a series of on-stage conversations reminiscing on the film and album.

In the rendition of “Burning Down the House” below, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams falls effortlessly into the joyous groove captured so iconically in Stop Making Sense, her vibrato helping to capture the intensity of the live film version. Check out the first track below, as we wait to see when exactly Everyone’s Getting Involved will be hitting our airwaves.
