The shorthand most folks have used to classify the Chicago band Avantist is “experimental.” And while that does speak to some elements of the group’s sound, there’s a method and structure to their musical madness that places it squarely in the world of noise rock. It’s a locale that this quartet of actual brothers feels very comfortable in, creating an agitated racket that makes great use of heated guitar duels and some particularly unhinged drumming.
Avantist has already released a fine, fine album this year, but feeling as inspired as they are, the four gents hit the studio and knocked out a new EP called Terasoma that they’ll be releasing (via No Trend Records) on June 22nd. Kind people that they are, they gave us the chance to share a track from it, a loose live wire called “this_could_be_it_,” with Paste. Here’s what they had to say about the tune:
“this_could_be_it” is a frantic call to survival. The song is rooted deep with the themes of death and rebirth. The chorus of “Alzame, antes de…” can be interpreted as either “Raise me up” or “hide me away” before the ambiguous embrace of death reaches you. It also deals with the uncertainty of the other side, and how the power of myth could ultimately guide you to survive in the heartless world we live in.
