Toto’s Got Their “Hash Pipe,” Covering Weezer in Vancouver

Weezer got their first (low) charting hit in over a decade after covering Toto’s 1982 classic “Africa.” The largely faithful rendition fulfilled a long-running, if not a little obscure, fan request—there have even been Twitter accounts dedicated to making sure Weezer blessed the rains down in Africa.

On Monday night in Vancouver, Toto returned the favor and unveiled their Weezer tribute. During their set, they took on the younger band’s Green Album single “Hash Pipe.” “We figured since we were smoking hash since before they were born, that’s the one we should do,” Toto guitarist and vocalist Steve Lukather joked before jumping into a cover that didn’t stray too far from its source material.

Since the release of Weezer’s “Africa,” they’ve shared a 7” vinyl of the track with a cover of Toto’s “Rosanna” on the b-side. They’ve also taken the stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform the song with Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro, and taken the song on their tour with Pixies, closing out their set to take some time to do the things they never had.
