Daily Dose: Uni Boys, “I Don’t Believe in Love”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

It’s been a while since Daily Dose popped up on the Paste page. I’ve wanted to resurrect this old column for a while, finally making good on my hopes and dreams today once and for all. In our first installment since pre-pandemic life, we are highlighting “I Don’t Believe in Love,” a roaring, shimmering cut from Uni Boys’ recently released album Buy This Now!.

“I Don’t Believe in Love,” like the rest of Buy This Now!, is a grandiose, sticky display of hook-centric rock ‘n’ roll catchiness. 2023 has been the year of power pop revivalism, be it through Diners’ DOMINO, most of Chris Farren’s Doom Singer, Mo Troper’s “For You to Sing” or, of course, The Lemon Twigs’ Everything Harmony. It will likely come as no surprise then that brothers Michael and Brian D’Addario—the faces and voices of The Lemon Twigs—both produced Buy This Now!, a record that belongs in a museum.

There’s a warm familiarity running all throughout Buy This Now!, yet even the most accurate callbacks (The Knack and Pulp come to mind immediately) don’t paint a full picture. “I Don’t Believe in Love” is not bound to any era but this one, as it taps into the sensibilities that have made the melodic, accessible corners of indie rock all the more marvelous. It’s the utmost proof that Uni Boys are at their very best on this album.

Uni Boys make Los Angeles feel magical again, as they’ve found a way to perfectly merge wondrous pop construction with shiny, magnetic guitar chords. “I Don’t Believe in Love” is one of the longest songs on Buy This Now! and still barely clocks in at over three minutes. But the work is so solid and rapturous and unforgettable. There couldn’t be a better song or a better earworm for the reawakening of Daily Dose.
