Trump Yells at Internet to Change the Family-Separating Immigration Law He Started

Trump yelled at the internet today to “change the laws,” referring to the zero-tolerance immigration policy his own administration put in place. This tweet is just one of Trump’s multiple attempts to blame the separation of immigrant families and child detention centers on Democrats.

This first tweet was published around 6 a.m. and it wasn’t until almost 10 a.m. that Trump expanded on his original outburst. Shockingly, the explanation tweet was filled with grammar mistakes and typos.

Who exactly is Trump yelling at to change his laws? The Democrats, of course. The second that the zero-tolerance policy began facing backlash, Trump pointed to and blamed the Democrats. On Friday, Trump stated (read: lied) to the press and on Twitter that the zero-tolerance policy was created by Democrats.

However, the zero-tolerance policy is a Republican policy and ultimately, it’s Trump’s policy. Republican Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the policy on May 7 at the San Diego border, stating, “I have put into place a zero tolerance for illegal entry on our Southwest border.”

He went on to add:

If you cross the border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you. It’s that simple. If you smuggle illegal aliens across our border, then we will prosecute you. If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you. And that child maybe separated from you as required by law.

According to the New York Times, the zero-tolerance policy was discussed during Trump’s first days in the White House: “Almost immediately after President Trump took office, his administration began weighing what for years had been regarded as the nuclear option in the effort to discourage immigrants from unlawfully entering the United States.” To add to the evidence that this is a Republican law, we turn to the official Department of Human Services website. The Zero Tolerance Immigration Prosecutions – Families Fact Sheet states:

The Attorney General directed United States Attorneys on the Southwest Border to prosecute all amenable adults who illegally enter the country, including those accompanied by their children, for 8 U.S.C. § 1325(a), illegal entry. Children whose parents are referred for prosecution will be placed with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).

Finally, Congress is currently controlled by Republicans, who hold 235 seats in the House while Democrats hold 193. The Senate currently holds 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats. Ultimately, this law is not a Democratic law. This is nothing more than an outrageous attempt by Trump to keep Congress Republican after the midterm elections by blatantly lying to the nation.
