Whoa—Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders Might Debate, and Soon

Politics News Donald Trump

Last night, appearing on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Donald Trump made a very interesting promise:

For those without video capabilities, here’s how that exchange went:

Kimmel: Here’s the question from Bernie. He asks: Hillary Clinton backed out of an agreement to debate me in California before the June 7 primary. Are you prepared to debate the major issues facing our largest state and our country before the California primary, yes or no? He wants to know if you’ll debate him.

Trump: Yes I am, how much is he going he pay me?

Kimmel: You would do it for a price, what would the price be?

Trump: Yeah, because if I debated him we would have such high ratings and I think I should give—take that money and give it to some worthy charity, okay?

Kimmel: So if it was done for charity, you would agree to do that?

Trump: If we paid a nice sum toward a charity, I would love to do that.

The response from the Sanders camp was fast:

So that’s a done deal, right? Well…maybe. Obviously Bernie is raring to go (he stands to benefit far more), but the real concern is Trump. He says a lot of things—some of them sincere, some of them not so sincere. Whether he truly intends to debate Bernie, or if that was just a throwaway line on a late night talk show, remains to be seen. This could be end up being one of the great political teases of the entire campaign season, and we’ll probably know more when Bernie appears on Kimmel tonight.

But if it happens? Oh my God, the popcorn. The popcorn!
