Walk of Shame: Washington, DC

How to survive the day after

Travel Features Washington

While visiting Washington, D.C., you will learn about some of America’s most influential figures. Lincoln, Washington, Obama, and, of course, the intriguing person you met while out in Adams Morgan last night. The person so interesting you felt the need to spend the entire night with them.

Now, it’s morning and you’ve got to continue exploring this historical destination of honor and justice in last night’s outfit. Here’s how to get through a Walk of Shame day in DC with pride.

Where to Keep Going

If you believe that the cure for a hangover is the hair of the dog, make your way to Logan Tavern and get lost in their extensive bloody mary menu. Customize your bloody by choosing the exact type of alcohol you’d like from their list of different vodkas, tequilas and gins; how hot you want it; and what sustenance you’d like it to be topped with, whether its bacon or cream cheese.

If the five-step system is too intense for you, Masa 14 might be more your speed. With a bottomless brunch for $39 (drinks and food), this Latin-Asian restaurant has plenty of options without overwhelming.

Where to Recharge

Whether its coffee, clothes or cookies you’re after, DC’s new communal marketplace, Maketto, has everything you could possibly need under one roof. Meaning: your aching feet don’t have to traipse around the city to get yourself in working order. Fuel up on coffee at Maketto’s cafe, and head up to the roof to grab a phone charger, Tums or headphones from their vending machine that basically serves as an emergency kit stuffed with everything you may have left at someone else’s house.

Where to Find Comfort

If you don’t feel comfortable staying for breakfast, Ted’s Bulletin is the next best thing. The old-timey diner with two DC locations clearly knows their clientele well, as they have a Walk of Shame Breakfast Burrito stuffed with steak, eggs, cheese, potatoes and chili sauce. Their milkshakes and creatively concocted burgers (we’re partial to the peanut butter bacon burger) will nurse you back to health in no time. The best part is, if you call ahead and let them know you are on your way, they will place you on the waitlist over the phone, which means less time standing around with strangers. Ain’t nobody got time for that when you’re fresh out of someone else’s bed.

Where to Freshen Up

Slip into something a little more comfortable at Maketto’s retail shops like Human Made and Naked and Famous before getting a much-needed hair washing at Fellow Barber.

Where to Hide

If DC’s sunlight is just too strong for you, sink into one of E Street Cinema’s plush faux-leather chairs for a mellow afternoon for indie flicks. With a fully stocked bar, E Street Cinema is one of few DC movie theaters to offer alcohol. If you’re not quite ready for another drink just yet, they also have an espresso bar and vegan treats.

If you’re willing to spend a few extra bucks, spend the afternoon at the legendary Ford’s Theatre, where Abraham Lincoln was shot while enjoying a show from a balcony in 1865. The landmark still serves as a theatre, showcasing major plays and musicals, and also houses a museum that focuses on Civil War Washington and the years of Lincoln’s presidency.
