BBC America Orders Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Adaptation

BBC America has ordered eight episodes of the adaptation of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency book series. The novels are by Douglas Adams, the late author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

The television show will be written by Max Landis, of 2012’s Chronicle and this year’s American Ultra and Victor Frankenstein. Landis had previously read the books and credits Adams as a literary role model. Ideate’s Arvind Ethan David will executive produce and has previously written a stage adaptation while attending boarding school near London. David med Adams, who died in 2001, when he attended a performance of the show.

The partnership with BBC America seems fitting as Adams served as showrunner of Doctor Who in the ‘80s. Variety says that BBC America sees Dirk Gently as a fantasy companion piece to the cult show.

The television series will illustrate the odd excursions of detective Dirk Gently and his assistant Todd as they tackle “one big metaphysical mystery per season. In addition to TV, David will write the relaunch of the comic books series through IDW Entertainment.
