Watch out, Monterey: Madeline, Renata, Jane, Celeste and Bonnie are back. Laura Dern (Renata) posted the first look from the set of Big Little Lies season two late Monday night on Instagram. Zoe Kravitz (Bonnie) and Shailene Woodley (Jane) also posted pictures announcing their return to the new season, which will also see Meryl Streep joining the already-stacked cast. It is confirmed that Nicole Kidman (Celeste), Iain Armitage (Ziggy), Adam Scott (Ed), James Tupper (Nathan) and Jeffrey Nordling (Gordon) will be returning, with David E. Kelley writing the entire season. Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies, has created a story for the continuation of the show despite there not being a second novel.
Last year’s breakout Hong Chau, who had a supporting role on the Emmy-winning limited series playing Jackie, one of the mothers and commentators, is not yet confirmed to return. Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold (Wasp), best known for her 2016 Cannes Jury-winning American Honey, is set to direct all seven episodes of the new season. The first season director, Jean-Marc Vallée, is not returning due to scheduling conflicts.
HBO executives spoke about the forthcoming season at the IN-TV Conference in Jerusalem earlier this month, reassuring the public that this new season is underway and that it will not disappoint. Unfortunately, the series is not expected to return until 2019 but we can expect some real good television for when it does.
