Bret Easton Ellis Will Make His Directorial Debut With a New Thriller Series for Fullscreen

Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote such delightfully cynical Gen-X novels as American Psycho, Rules of Attraction and Less Than Zero, is set to direct a series called The Deleted for the VOD service Fullscreen, with production starting this summer. The show has been in development for more than a year.

Because this is Bret Easton Ellis, the series is going to focus on a group of fucked-up twenty-somethings, but in this case, they weren’t fucked up by Yuppie culture—they were all in a cult and escaped. The Deleted will focus on the paranoia that consumes these young people when three Los Angelinos disappear for reasons unknown. There will probably be a lot of sex and drugs and violence tied in, somehow. “It’s going push some boundaries and it’s definitely going to be the darkest of our original shows,” said George Strompolos, founder and CEO of Fullscreen.

Fullscreen announced Easton Ellis’ series as it prepares to launch its ad-free, $4.99/month subscription service, and The Deleted is easily the biggest fish they’ve landed. It’ll be interesting to see if the company’s lower prices are enough to attract some streaming traffic away from the Netflixes and Hulus of the world, but that will also likely depend on whether The Deleted and Fullscreen’s other original content is up to snuff.

Fullscreen launches worldwide on April 26. The Deleted is currently without a premiere date.
