First-look images for Paramount Television/Anonymous Content’s forthcoming six-part limited series adaptation of Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22 have been released, showing lead Christopher Abbott (The Sinner), and Hollywood heavy-hitters George Clooney, Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Hugh Laurie (House), all in World War II-era costume.
Heller’s satire, often cited as one of the most significant novels of the 20th century, follows the journey of Captain John Yossarian (Abbott) during his time in the U.S. Air Force piloting a B-25 bomber. The characters are considered insane for flying such dangerous combat missions, a state that would deem someone eligible for removal from the mission. However, due to a bureaucratic “catch-22,” the characters would be considered rational for making such a request—asking to be removed due to concern for one’s own safety—and thus ineligible for such removal. The novel’s narrative follows the book’s characters as they struggle to maintain sanity, complete their mission and return home.
Beyond Abbott, Clooney, Chandler and Laurie, the cast includes Giancarlo Giannini (Marcello), Daniel David Stewart (Milo), Rafi Gavron (Aarfy), Austin Stowell (Nately), Graham Patrick Martin (Orr), Gerran Howell (Kid Sampson), Jon Rudnitsky (McWatt), Kevin J. O’Connor (Korn), Pico Alexander (Clevinger), Tessa Ferrer (Nurse Duckett), Lewis Pullman (Major Major), Josh Bold (Dunbar), Jay Paulson (Chaplain) and Julie Ann Emery (Marion).
Clooney also serves as executive producer, representing Smokehouse Pictures along with Grant Heslov. Also executive producing are Richard Brown and Steve Golin, both on behalf of Anonymous Content, and Luke Davies and David Michôd. The latter two also serve as co-writers. Clooney and Heslov also directed episodes—two each—with Ellen Kuras directing the other two. The series will premiere on Hulu in spring 2019.
